They’re Sick I Tell You, Sick!

I have not one but two kids home sick from school today. They’re behaving beautifully, they’re not whiners, they’re not (thank goodness) dangerously or awfully sick … but truth be told it’s still a pain in the butt.

There are so many advantages to working at home but it does make it more of a challenge to call in sick! I know, I know, in many ways it’s much easier for us home-based workers when it comes to adjusting schedules but we just have so much work on hand at the moment it’s getting a bit overwhelming.

We’re currently working on a project for a local non-profit who are building their first professionally designed web site. Previously they basically just had a page that said who they were, what they did, and how to get in touch with them. This time they want something much more extensive.

I’m not going to share much about the client, but it’s a small foundation that addresses a particular medical problem. They have three interconnected missions:

  • Raising money for research
  • Directing patients to resources and information
  • Providing information for families, employers, and social services who encounter people with this illness.

So we have to offer three tracks through the information on the site, while still making sure that the site is a unified entity. It’s a challenge for both the design and the writing of content, because the three groups of end users are quite different.

We’re enjoying the work, but we really need to concentrate … and as terrific as our sick kids are being, it’s still a distraction. OK, whiniing’s over now - I’m going to put a pot of chicken soup on the stove for dinner, make sure the kids are both comfortable, and then get back to the grindstone.
